Gene therapy is an experimental form of biotechnology that treats genetic diseases. It does this by replacing or supplementing a defective gene with a healthy one so that it may function normally. Gene therapy aids the body in building proteins which the malfunctioning gene cannot do. This unique form of medical treatment involves targeting the affected genome (genetic material) of an individual with a healthy, functioning gene.
